A Short History of 21 years
Kinsale had a Tennis Club, but it ceased to exist in the 1940’s. The Convent School Tennis Courts were used and also private courts around Kinsale. The vision, drive and determination of Bill Tayler were evident. When the Kinsale Rugby Club, established in 1982, bought grounds in Snugmore, the land surplus to their requirements was used to establish a Tennis Club in 1985. Three Tarmacadam courts were erected. In 1989-1990, the tennis club purchased the land from the rugby club and also built a clubhouse of which they were very proud.
In an act of vandalism this clubhouse was burnt down in 1996. A new clubhouse was erected in 2000. The club has gone from strength to strength, from the initial 50 members to a growing membership, presently at 410.
To mark the 21st Anniversary of the founding of the club, the inaugural Kinsale Open Tennis Tournament was hosted from May 28th –June 4th 2006. Bill Tayler would have been very proud.
